Door Handle Replacement

It's worth it to replace door handles if you don't like the way they appear, or if they are difficult to use. With a little patience, you can get a new handle in no time.

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates which hide the screws, giving them a more attractive appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if your new handle does not already have them.

The door handle is not only a decoration for your home, but it's also a safety feature that allows you to lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes your door handle can lose its grip, feel loose or start to look old and worn out. This is a sign that it's time to replace your door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door which could pose the risk of security for you and your family.

It is also recommended to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially when your children or elderly family members have difficulty opening it and could get trapped within. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're not certain that the new door handle you are buying will work, take off the old one and measure the holes in its housing. This will let you buy the right size door handle.

The most straightforward method to take off the handle from your door is to unscrew it from the door. This is usually done using the screw driver. Some door handles have the cover plate, which conceals the screws that mount them. You'll need to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make an outline of how the spindle is connected so that you can be sure to align it when you install the new one.

You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. This is usually done using a screwdriver but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be just to the left of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, you can unscrew the handle from the strike plate, and then the latch away from the door's edge.

Remove the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace the latch plate when you replace the handle. It's the part that holds the hole through which the latch for the door is inserted when the door is closed. The packaging that the new handles come in will have two latch plates: one that is rectangular and the other circular (see the above diagram that outlines the parts of the door brompton carry handle). If your current latch plate is a rectangular shape, switch it to a round one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to use.

The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the latch plate that was previously in place. These screws are often tight, and will require some force to loosen. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have a second person assist you with this task.

After the screws have been removed and the latch plate will slide out of the door with ease. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can move on to making the new door strike plate to be installed. With the wood screws that came with your new handles, screw the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Don't over tighten your screws as this can damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the right position Try closing and then opening the door to see whether it locks and closes correctly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too shallow or not the right size for the latch, or due to a broken or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but using the use of a metal file instead an hammer and chisel.

Removing the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into a hole on the door's frame so that the door stays closed. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch might be the only thing needed to fix it.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to see, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle.

If the latch won't come out, try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the that the latch and handle begin to break off. You may have to repeat this process several times before you are able to take the latch off.

It should be possible to slide the new latch into its slot with no issues once you have removed the old one. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before installing the new handle, be sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, ensure whether the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with this measurement.

If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll require an entirely new one. If you're not changing locks, the new latch should fit in your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Make sure you select the latch with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.

Removing the Cover Plate

To replace an internal door handle remove the cover plate (or rose), which covers the screws and mechanism. Find an release tab on the plate and use a flathead screwdriver to lift it off the knob. It may have a slot on one edge or be secured by a pin.

Once the cover plate is off, remove the screw that holds the interior locking window handle in place and set it aside. Take off the screws that hold both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them using a Philips Screwdriver. Then, you can remove the outer plates and latch plate from the door and put them aside.

Not all doors have this gap. If yours does not have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole into the door to install the new handle. The installation of new door knob screws is required after the holes have been drilled. Make sure you purchase the same size as the old ones, so you don't end up with a handle that's too tight or too loose.
