    Origins

Toto's early history which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured products to meet the growing demand for modern, new urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country that produced ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s, the company began expanding overseas in order to profit from sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers in order to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and increased the firm's market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and boost profits. The company employed the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability.
