Chimineas of clay can be fired in kilns, which remove organic materials from the clay and seals the pores to avoid cracking. They can be used all year round however they shouldn't be exposed to the elements for too long.

Origins

Design

It should be placed in a level location and away from any flammable objects, such as trees, grass or other structures. The chiminea should be placed on a brick, concrete, or stone patio and never on a wooden deck. It's also a good idea to put 50mm of sand or Gardeco lava stones beneath the chiminea to protect it from direct heat and to keep the hottest part of the fire pits & chimineas from the clay.

Materials

Kiln-fired clay chimineas and terracotta are still being made today by small factories. The temperatures can rise up to 1000c. Once they are cooled and cured they are then assemble. Some are glazed, while others remain unglazed. These chimineas provide the Mexican feel in the garden.
