    Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

    Despite its limitations the DCT is a valuable instrument to study the connection between prosody, information structure, and non-native speakers. The ability to manipulate social variables that affect politeness in two or more steps could be a plus. This characteristic can be utilized to study the effect of prosody in various cultural contexts.

    In the field of linguistics DCT is one of the most effective tools for analyzing communication behaviors of learners. It can be used to examine various aspects that include politeness, turn taking, and lexical choices. It can also be used to determine the phonological complexity of learners their speech.

    A recent study used a DCT to test EFL students' refusal skills. Participants were presented with a list of scenarios and were required to choose a suitable response from the options provided. The researchers found that the DCT was more effective than other refusal measures such as a questionnaire or video recordings. However, the researchers warned that the DCT should be used with caution and should include other methods for collecting data.

    DCTs can be designed using specific language requirements, like design and content. These criteria are intuitive and based on the assumptions of test designers. This issue calls for more research on alternative methods of measuring refusal competence.

    In a recent research study, DCT responses to student inquiries via email were compared to the responses of an oral DCT. The results showed that DCTs preferred more direct and conventionally-indirect request forms and utilized hints less than email data.

    Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)

    This study examined Chinese learners' decisions regarding their use of Korean using a variety of experimental tools, such as Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) Metapragmatic Questionnaires, Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs with intermediate or higher ability who responded to DCTs and MQs. They were also asked to consider their evaluations and refusal performances in RIs. The results showed that CLKs often resisted native Korean pragmatic norms, and their decisions were influenced by four major factors such as their personalities, multilingual identities, ongoing life histories, and relational benefits. These findings have pedagogical consequences for L2 Korean assessment.

The results of the coding process are contrasted with the original RI transcripts to determine how well they reflected the actual behavior.

    Refusal Interviews

    A key question of pragmatic research is why learners choose to resist pragmatic norms that native speakers use. A recent study sought to answer this question employing a variety of research tools, such as DCTs MQs, DCTs and RIs. The participants consisted of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were required to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. Then, they were invited to attend a RI where they were asked to reflect on their responses to the DCT situations.

    The results showed that, on average, the CLKs rejected native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even when they were able to create patterns that resembled natives. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, like relationship benefits. They described, for example, how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and cultural expectations of their university.

    However, the interviewees also expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties that they could be subject to if they violated the local social norms. They were concerned that their native interactants might perceive them as "foreigners" and think they are not intelligent.
