Combining form and functionality, French-door refrigerators have stylish double doors that open up to an enormous fridge on the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their special features, such as door-to-door dispensers and more expensive ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the right one. We looked at the capacity of storage, layout, and energy efficiency among other features.

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchens. This fridge is loaded with them all from a Keurig K cup coffee maker on the door to a smart dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs more, I'd expect better.

This fridge is a great choice, despite the blip. It has a large freezer compartment, which is unusual for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds a lot of frozen food, which is a big difference from other models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment offers 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on what you would expect from an French door fridge that costs this much. It comes with a decent size freezer in the left side. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments for an individual storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is good-looking, too. The LED lighting is a nice addition and the inside storage bins come with a third shelf that can fold down to make it possible to store large items. The drawers include temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to open and shut however I found the textured plastic coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and allows you to manage your refrigerator from anywhere in the globe. It also offers numerous options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when the door is left unlocked as well as when the freezer or fridge needs to be defrosted, and when the filter requires a change.

It is nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill it's an option in a few other GE fridges that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to disperse simultaneously. The fridge displays a countdown to reveal how much water remains but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look like a seamless part of your kitchen, Bosch's french style fridges-door refrigerator is one of a kind. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also boasts a veggie compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher longer, and two compressors for maximum preservation of food. The ice maker we tested was one of the most efficient and produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This refrigerator is a great choice for single household or kitchenettes that want an integrated look and top of the line food preservation.

This fridge was rated the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. Its freezer temperatures held firm at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and never fluctuating more than a fraction of an inch. This is essential in preventing freezing burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well, achieving the desired temperature for initial set within an hour and maintaining the temperature constant over the course of our tests.

Bosch is known for its top-of-the-line appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app allows you to monitor and control the refrigerator remotely using your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is costly however, it offers excellent features and capabilities at a reasonable cost.

While the fridge is an amazing piece of equipment but it's important to be aware of the limitations. You might need to be inventive with tall items since the fridge has a small shelf space. The shelves are not resistant to spills and are easily damaged or stained by sharp objects. It is easy to take out the trays from the fridge however, you must clean them frequently to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who need a lot of space in an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish fisher and paykel french door fridge ice maker features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with the standard french door fridge no water dispenser door design, with two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to make space for tall items. There's also a full-width storage drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

One of the great aspects of this refrigerator is that the ice maker is in the freezer, which makes it easy to transfer ice into the fridge to use as needed. The freezer is designed with thoughtful elements, as well, such as sliding drawers to help you better organize the position of your items. It also has a huge bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food items and an additional container for storing ice.

Smart InstaView panel is another awesome feature of the refrigerator. It lets you manage the refrigerator's temperature and lighting using your smartphone. It's a great way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

However, while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill food in this fridge than some of the others we tested. This could be due to its greater capacity.

The doors are a different issue with this refrigerator. They have sunken handles on the front that allow smaller people to open them from the bottom, however they're not easy for taller people to pull shut without slamming them. It would have been much better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good option for those looking to combine the advantages of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. It has a capacity that is higher than average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a little cheaper than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which can make it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice if you want a french door Fridge home depot-door fridge that won't break the budget. It has a simple design that isn't as striking in appearance as other models however it comes with enough features to make it a solid choice. Its most notable characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer which helps keep food items like veggies and meat fresher for longer. The "Chill Drawer", which is located over the two crisper bins, is another excellent feature. This drawer lets you redirect some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can keep food items that require extra attention. I've found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my tests, I found that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in various parts of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator did not differ much from 38 degrees. This is a solid performance but doesn't quite make it to the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. The fridge can be linked with a smart thermostat in order to obtain more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of stainless steel with a grey body with a "smudge-proof" finish. It wards off streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tested.
